“So creative”

It all begins with an idea.

Albert Einstein once said “creativity is seeing what everyone else has seen , and thinking what no one else has thought”…He also said “Creativity is intelligence having fun”. If you have you ever looked at an object and saw not just the object itself, but it’s full potential, you are in a class of like-minded individuals,…we call them creatives!

If I had a dollar for every time someone said to me “you’re so creative” I could have bought my Burkin bag by now!…hahaha. While I do accept the compliment as a casual remake, It holds a much deeper meaning to me. Truth is, before I started embracing the word “Creative” I always thought that my designs was a bit weird. “I mean, I liked them, but I didn’t think that they would capture anyone’s eyes but my own.

I am going to share a little story with you guys, because this was definitely a turning point for me, as far as how I view my work, what’s inspires and motivates me, and why I am still in business to this day.

So back in 2019 I made a dress, and this dress was a lot different from any design I have ever made, because for the first time it wasn’t just about cutting and stitching, I wanted to make something that had an artistic vibe to it, so i came up with this idea of putting artificial flowers on a mesh dress, and the flowers were going to be placed over all the most provocative areas of the female body, such as her private, her boobs and her buttocks. I didn’t know how I was going to pull this off, as I knew sewing each flower on, one by one would be way too time consuming, and I thought to myself, ‘you can’t put glue on fabric” any who I decided to hand sew in some areas and glue in the areas that required more flowers. Finally, almost 24hrs later the dress was completed, and on a scale of 1-10 as far as my personal thoughts on the dress I would have given it an 8. That all changed drastically when I showed the dress to one of my closest friends at the time, and she said, and I quote “that is the ugliest dress I have ever seen” I was crushed, sad, discouraged, but oddly enough i wasn’t angry. I Put my all into this dress, I loved it and It was the first time that I took a chance on showing my creative and artistic side with any of my designs. In that moment I didn’t have much to say to that friend because I was still in shock that someone could give such an unconstructed-criticism. A day or 2 went by, and I got myself back together and I sent a photo of the dress to another close friend. She called be back in seconds, telling me how much she loves the dress, she wanted the dress and whatever the cost she will pay it! I didn’t even have a price, but I knew the hard work that went into it, so I explained to her the process, time and money that went into making the dress, gave her a price, and she did not hesitate. The was the most money I have ever received for a sale, and it was in that moment I knew what will set me apart from the rest “creativity”. I never made another one after that sale. Fast forward to 2022, A beautiful artificial mesh/ flower dress was trending, worn by many celebrities, influencers, and average Janes. Now I will leave you all to figure out the moral of this story!

From then until now, I have only been flowing off of my own creative juices, bringing to life unique one-of-a-kind designs that literally are swimming around in my head. Some will make the cut and some won’t, but that is the beauty of being “so Creative” Ideas are consistently flowing around in your head, and as great as some of them are, the world will never get to see them. Often times creators in any industry will overlook great ideas and bring to life the ones they are in love with, something I have done many time, every now and then I say to myself “girl you may have just got rid of a million dollar idea” but at the end of the day it’s ok because that is a part of the creative process.

After 10 years I am motivated by my creativity, my ability to see fashion on an artistic level, and in the last 5 years I would definitely say that I have evolved into a creative visionary, and with that, as a designer, I will always be relevant, I will never quit. and most of all, my designs will always surpass the previous. Now I am not saying that my latest designs will be better than the last, in the eyes of my clients/ audience, but what I am saying is my level of creativity will always surpass the last, when speaking on couture/ bespoke looks.

Fashion $ Dancehall

It all begins with an idea.

The red carpet is considered the fashion runway for some of the biggest award shows. From the Grammys to the Oscars, not to mention the MET Gala. Some of the biggest names in Fashion and show business, grace our red carpets, wearing the hottest styles and trends.

These events are highly anticipated by spectators around the world. They watch in awww as each individual take their turn walking the red carpet, showing, off who/what they’re wearing.

Since the early 90’s Fashion has been “HIGHLY” publicized in dancehall. I was just a teenager when Shabba Rangs debuted his video for “Trailer load a girl”, And I can remember just staring at the television in admiration. The designs were outstanding! Sequins outfits, bodysuits, and uniquely designed statement pieces, it was amazing to watch.  “I’m pretty sure I watched that video over a hundred times”

When we think of fashion, we think of runways, fashion shows and top-notch designers, but on the contrary the dancehall scene has evolved into its own fashion gala.

For more than a decade, dancehall events have been imitated around the world, and no one would disagree that dancehall originated in Jamaica. As more Jamaicans started to migrate to different parts of the world, they formulated their own dancehall fraternity, hosting some of the most elaborate events, much anticipated like the Grammys/ MET Gala.

There is much to be said about the dancehall fraternity in Toronto. Dancehall events are much bigger than the music, in fact most of the events that are taking place these days are fashion focused, with titles such as “fashion statement/ dress code/ designer & bottles, just to name a few. There are at least 3-6 dancehall events taking place every weekend, and party patron decide which event(s) they will be attending, however there is always one event that is highly anticipated and that is usually where you will get to see all the dons and Divas and top fashionistas.

Fashion in dancehall has become a profitable market for Toronto Fashion designers. The average cost for a statement piece ranges anywhere from $300-$600, sometimes more, depending on the designer, and party goers are making a statement with their outfits. Some of the hottest names in dancehall have certainly earned titles such as fashionistas and trendsetters. One in particular is Toronto’s very own, Nikki Hype, who is not just a party goer, she has made a name for herself as an international host, and in my opinion, one of the most diverse individuals on Toronto Fashion/Dancehall scene, when it comes to fashion. She is one of the top hosts for many of the dancehall events in Toronto, and she is always on point.

High fashion in dancehall is nothing new, however it is wonderful to see where we came from and where we are today. The Met gala has recently released the dress code for 2025. “Superfine tailoring Black Style” ,As a black designer, that focuses on creativity and the art of fashion, I am super excited about the 2025 Met Gala.

Dancehall will forever be fashion focused, however we have added style and class to the dance floor over the years, and as a long time dancehall patron it is really beautiful to see.

So, weather you’re wearing a custom, statement piece from an independent designer, or a piece from an affordable retail brand, I think we all can agree that fashion is the forefront of dancehall.

It all begins with an idea.

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.

Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.
